What Is DTF Printing? A Complete Guide for Apparel Brands
Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing has quietly become the go-to method for short-run, full-color apparel. Here's how it works, why it beats screen printing for small batches, and when it's the right call for your brand.
What is DTF printing?
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a heat-transfer technique that prints your artwork onto a special PET film using water-based pigment inks, coats it with a hot-melt adhesive powder, cures it, and then presses the design onto fabric with a heat press. The result is a soft, stretchable, full-color print that bonds to almost any fabric — cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, leather, and more.
How DTF printing works, step by step
- Design prep. Artwork is mirrored and sent to a DTF printer.
- Print on film. CMYK colors are laid down first, followed by a white ink underbase.
- Adhesive powder. Hot-melt adhesive is sprinkled onto the wet ink and shaken off the negative space.
- Curing. The film is cured in an oven or under a heater so the adhesive bonds to the ink.
- Heat press. The film is pressed onto the garment at ~160 °C for 15 seconds, then peeled.
DTF vs screen printing: why DTF wins for small runs
- No screens, no setup fees. Screen printing needs a separate screen per color — expensive for small orders. DTF prints any design, any color count, with zero setup.
- Full-color photographic detail. Gradients, fine lines, and photo-real artwork print cleanly. Screen printing struggles with this.
- Works on any fabric. Cotton, poly, blends, nylon, leather — DTF doesn't care. Screen printing and DTG are fussier about fabric.
- Soft, durable finish. DTF transfers survive 50+ washes without cracking when applied correctly.
- Fast turnaround. No screen burning, no color separations — orders ship in days, not weeks.
When DTF is the right choice
DTF is ideal when you need:
- Small to medium runs (1–500 pieces) where screen printing's setup cost isn't worth it.
- Multi-color or photographic designs.
- A mix of fabric types in one order — team kits, merch drops, uniforms.
- Quick reorders without re-paying setup fees.
When DTF isn't the best fit
- Very large runs (1,000+ of the same design). At that scale, screen printing's per-unit cost wins.
- Ultra-thin, breathable performance fabric where any film layer would be noticeable.
How durable is a DTF print?
A properly cured and pressed DTF transfer typically survives 40–60 home washes with minimal fading or cracking. Wash inside-out, cold, and tumble dry low to push the lifespan further.
Cost expectations
Because DTF has no per-color setup, pricing is driven by print size, not complexity. A full-color A4-sized chest print typically costs the same as a single-color one of the same dimensions. For one-off samples, custom team uniforms, or capsule merch runs, DTF is often the cheapest professional option available.
